Abstract: O projecto de que estes textos são os primeiros resultados diz respeito&#xD;
a relatos de viagens. Na realidade, trata-se de obras que se apresentam como tema de análise de extremo interesse para verificação do modo como são articuladas e codificadas linguisticamente as dimensões sociais e culturais, pois, embora de um ponto de vista individual, é certo, expressam&#xD;
directamente visões que transcendem cada um dos produtores textuais e nos remetem para percepções mais vastas sobre aspectos diversos e polissémicos relativos à cultura e à sociedade de que dão testemunho. Embora o projecto inclua no seu corpus textos em língua portuguesa e em língua inglesa, nesta primeira fase foi apenas considerado um&#xD;
conjunto de textos escritos em inglês e publicados em Inglaterra nas décadas de trinta e quarenta do século XIX. O corpus de onde foram retirados os dados de análise dos artigos apresentados totaliza cerca de 350.000 palavras e é constituído por&#xD;
quatro obras, escritas por quatro viajantes por Portugal, todas elas naturalmente enquadráveis no género “Relatos de Viagens”. Desse corpus fazem parte, designadamente: The Tourist in Portugal, de W. H. Harrison, publicado em 1839; Narrative of a Voyage to Madeira, Teneriffe, and along the Shores of the Mediterranean, obra em dois volumes de William Robert Willis Wilde,&#xD;
publicada em 1840; Lusitanian Sketches of the Pen and Pencil, dois volumes da autoria de William Henry Giles Kingston, publicados em 1845 e 1847; An Overland to Lisbon to the Close of 1846, with a Picture of the Actual State of Spain and Portugal, de Terence McMahon Hughes, publicado em&#xD;

Abstract: Given the imbalance that exists between English and other languages in research publishing today, academic translators working into English are obliged to orient their translations towards Anglo-Saxon norms and values in order to ensure acceptance by international journals. However, when the norms governing textual production in the source culture are very different from those of the target culture, extensive domestication is required, which may be difficult for authors to accept. Hence, the translator needs a profound understanding of the values and assumptions underpinning the discourses in question in order to act as cultural mediator, sensitively negotiating the construction of a text that is acceptable to both parts.</description>

Abstract: A organização de um colóquio em torno da “herança de Locke” foi uma ideia que nasceu no Centro de Estudos Anglísticos da Universidade de Lisboa, no âmbito do núcleo de investigação dedicado aos estudos de cultura inglesa. Vários textos de Locke são regularmente incluídos nos programas de graduação e de pósgraduação em Estudos Anglísticos, além de objecto de estudo especializado no Centro de Estudos Anglísticos. Assim, fazia todo o sentido comemorar, no ano de 2004, a passagem de mais um centenário sobre a morte de Locke, e celebrar a vitalidade da sua obra ao longo de três séculos reunindo especialistas que, publicamente, apresentassem e discutissem aspectos dessa obra que continuam activos&#xD;
no presente. O volume que agora se publica reúne as comunicações apresentadas em&#xD;
Janeiro de 2004. A variedade dos temas abordados e a manifesta relevância de que&#xD;
se revestem para o estudo da modernidade demonstram que a herança de Locke continua a produzir riqueza, e que constitui património cultural a ser herdado por novas gerações.</description>

Abstract: This chapter uses Tönnies’ notions of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft to examine the issue of plagiarism from a culturalist perspective. According to this, plagiarism is understood not as a universal or unequivocal evil, but as one component of a particular ethical system that took hold within a specific historical and social context, roughly contemporary with the European Enlightenment. Today, that ethical framework is so deeply entrenched in the power structures of the modern world that its values go largely unquestioned in countries at the centre of the world economic system. &#xD;
	However, as we move away from the centre towards the periphery, we find that those values become weaker, and may enter into conflict with another moral code, which is usually more traditional in nature, though no less coherent. Indeed, in some parts of the world, it is those traditional values that actually hold sway in local universities, raising serious problems for academic mobility and the internationalization of knowledge.   &#xD;
	The very concept of plagiarism is also full of inherent contradictions, caused, at least in part, by historical tensions generated by the passage from one kind of society to the other. Vestiges of the Gemeinschaft continue to penetrate all aspects of modern university culture, ranging from teaching practices (the persistence of imitatio in academic writing courses) and hierarchical relations (the power balance inherent in the tutor/student dynamic) to the very philosophy of knowledge underlying modern science (where the rhetorical implications of the citation procedure sit uncomfortably alongside a metadiscourse of transcendental truth).  &#xD;
	Hence, this chapter argues that, in a context of increased globalization, there is a need for a deeper understanding of the various dynamics at work in this complex concept.</description>
