Abstract: School menus represent a rational approach to eating, following nutritional expertise and food safety standards, but children are exposed to food offers that compete with the school menus. In this paper we intend to understand how competing and contradictory rationalities related to food are expressed in concrete visual sights and representations of food, made available to children in school canteens and food shops in the surroundings of schools, and appropriated by them.&#xD;
The empirical data was collected in four primary and secondary public schools in the area of Lisbon. Food-related sights, messages and images displayed at schools and in its surrounding commercial food outlets were subject to analysis, together with data from interviews with school directs and kitchen staff, and focus groups with parents and children, and direct observation.&#xD;
Results show sharp contrasts between sights and representations of food at school canteens and at commercial food outlets outside schools. Data also suggests that subjection to supervision, control and normatively discourse of diner ladies in the canteens stand out against autonomy, freedom and self-management of food purchases in the street. Parents approve and even encourage their children to eat outside the school, as it seems a way of experiencing life, gaining autonomy, socialising and exhibiting a higher social position relatively to their peers.</description>

Abstract: Em Portugal, bem como noutros países do mundo, tem vindo a ser implementadas políticas públicas para melhorar a alimentação nas escolas, de forma a ajudar a colmatar vários problemas: obesidade infantil, desigualdades sociais, impactos nocivos no ambiente, entre outros. Tendo como enquadramento teórico a perspectiva a-humanista de LEE (2008), inspirada numa sensibilidade semiótica material, e combinando-a com a noção de políticas alimentares incorporadas de CAROLAN (2011), são abordadas duas questões centrais. Em primeiro lugar, analisam-se os efeitos que as recentes políticas públicas de alimentação saudável têm nas subjetividades alimentares das crianças. Em segundo lugar, analisam-se as múltiplas conexões que as crianças estabelecem com múltiplos espaços e sintonizações alimentares (a rua, a casa, a escola, a pastelaria). O material empírico baseia-se na observação direta realizada numa escola situada num bairro de baixa renda de Lisboa, bem como entrevistas e grupos focais (um com crianças entre os 7 e os 9 anos de idade, e outro com pais). O paper pretende contribuir para uma compreensão mais ampla das vivências cotidianas das crianças em espaços plurais de consumo urbano, sobretudo quando este é alvo de regulação e normalização pelas políticas públicas de saúde alimentar que subscrevem uma certa ordem de classe. Este trabalho faz parte de um projeto de pesquisa financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia de Portugal.</description>
