Abstract: Abstract The Palmela castle played, over time, a key role in the organization of the Arrábida peninsula’s territory. Build in the 8th century, this fortress has witnessed more than four centuries of islamic occupation, reality that reflects the complexity of the archaeological site itself. The Dissertation here presented, consists in a typological and chrono-stratigraphic analysis of the ceramics from the castle’s gallery 5, exhumated in the first phase of archaeological works conducted in the citadel of the castle, under the coordination of Isabel Fernandes. The study of the ceramic material, in its various aspects, followed a diachronic perspective, in order to give to the subject of study an appropriate cultural and chronological framework. On the other hand, the integration of the ceramic in the main phases of islamic occupation attested in the valley of the Tagus and Sado, allowed the identification of cultural, economic, political and social interaction, within this vast administrative and territorial unit. The study of selected ceramics intends to contribute, through new archaeological data and a quantitative approach, to the construction of knowledge about the islamic occupation of the Palmela’s castle and all of the inter-estuary of the Tagus and Sado.
