Resumo: This research had as object of study the competition “A MINHA ESCOLA ADOPTA UM MUSEU…” [MY SCHOOL ADOPTS A MUSEUM…], carried through by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, involving the participation of students of all the education levels and the contribution of the museums belonging to the Portuguese Net of Museums. With this research we look for understanding if the competition promoted a continuous work relationship between schools and museums. We also intend to check if students’ participation made some impact on their learning process and the consolidation of knowledge, if it promoted and expanded artistic education, and inquire if the protagonists’ habits concerned with visiting more or less often/frequently these cultural spaces changed. To delineate this research we review the existing literature pointing out authors who have contributed to the conception of theories of aesthetic development and models of artistic appreciation. We also approach pedagogical theories about museums, to help us to reflect on their role in the education of young people and the public in general, and we draw a parallelism between formal and not formal education. The methodology, based on the existing literature, essentially focuses on interviews with participating teachers/students, with the responsible people of the educational services of the adopted museums/monuments and on the analysis of specific legislation and on the documentation published by the proponents of this competition. This research came to demonstrate that students’ participation contributed to the acquisition and consolidation of knowledge, to interdisciplinarity, to personal development and enrichment, considering factors such as contemplation, reflection, interpretation, artistic production and creation, heritage valuation and preservation. We also concluded that the museum educational services promote diversified activities for their public, mostly school groups of different levels. They favour the articulation with school contents of the different school subjects, though schools and museums don’t always cooperate. We can’t warrant it but we believe that students’ participation in this competition came to promote their intentions to go on visiting these cultural spaces when they become autonomous
