Memória e contemporaneidade : arte contemporânea indonésia : um projecto curatorial

Abstract

Memory and Contemporary proposes to study the contribution of traditional arts in contemporary art. The case study considered is related to the Javanese civilization (in latu sensu), which nowadays can be found in Java and Bali. The embryonic formation of the two islands is the same; the differences are based from the religious change that has occurred in Java, with the advent of Islam. The continuation of the discourses of the traditional arts in this region testifies the existing 'overlapping modernities', evident in the life of the cities and the rural areas; in the same way, is constitutes a legacy of the end of the colonial era, when the need to find an Indonesian identity was necessary for political liberation. The artists listed in this essay on the one hand refer to the traditional arts as a means of expressing their identity and simultaneously reflect their local reality, full of living traditions and civilizational syncretisms.
