Abstract: The field of Design Studies has evolved within the academia, from the need to reflect about the issues of design culture. As a discipline taught within bachelor and higher post-graduate design courses, Design Studies aims to provide other design disciplines with a deeper historic, theoretical and critical background, and also to train specialists capable of contributing to the production of knowledge on the issues of design through publishing and public speaking. When Design Studies has a project-inclusive programme, its contribution will also be made of projects focused on the design of exhibitions and objects meant to explore and promote culture. This investigation seeks to deepen the understanding of Design Studies’ take on project while considering current methodological design practices. The first part of this work is an introduction to the field of Design Studies: its origins, its role within the context of design, its main directions of thought and its leading theorists. It then traces the development of methodology in design, identifying its key moments, from the beginnings in industry and teaching to the state of the art in consulting and design organisations. The design process most commonly used today is presented, with a description of its phases and different approaches to it, including examples of methods for each. The second part seeks to identify the areas of intervention for which the project in Design Studies is most suitable, and then presents a multitude of examples of exhibition design and design of objects for cultural promotion. The third part presents two case studies of projects made within the Specialisation in Design Studies: the design of an exhibition and the design of an object for the promotion of a local culture. The design process used is described with an account of how the methods were applied. Finally, this investigation aims to identify some aspects which may characterise Design Studies’ take on project, and to propose some hypotheses for a discussion about how the main current methodological principles may apply to the demands of such project, as well as to suggest new project assumptions
