Juvenal, satvrae: tipos e vícios

Abstract

Nas suas Saturae, Juvenal dá-nos uma visão crítica da sociedade da Roma imperial. O objectivo deste trabalho foi procurar, através da leitura da obra, a forma como Juvenal constrói a sua crítica servindo-se de tipos (o cliens, o patronus, o delator, o liberto, o efeminado, a mulher adúltera...) para denunciar os vícios (avareza, luxúria, corrupção, hipocrisia, arrogância, venalidade...) que povoavam a sociedade romana do século II da nossa era. Tentámos mostrar como o autor se serve dessas personagens-tipo para criticar e moralizar, como é próprio da sátira. Integrámos o autor no género literário que cultivou, não de forma isolada mas dizendo-se herdeiro de Lucílio e Horácio. Foi feita a leitura integral da obra de Juvenal, todavia, o nosso trabalho incide sobretudo nas sátiras que integram os Livros I, II e III. iii

Abstract: In his Saturae, Juvenal gives us a critical view of the society of imperial Rome. The aim of this work, after duly reading the whole body of Juvenal’s work, was to find out how Juvenal builds his critique using certain types (the cliens, the patronus , the informer, the freed slave, the effeminate man, the adulterous wife,…) to expose the vices (greed, lust, corruption, hypocrisy, arrogance, venality,…) which characterize Roman society in the second century A.D. This work intends to show the way in which the author used these typified characters to criticize and moralize, as pertains to satire. The author has been integrated within the literary genre he cultivated but not viewed as an isolated case, rather as an heir to Lucilius and Horace. As mentioned above, the whole body of Juvenal’s work was read. However, in this study, only Satires of books I, II and III are referred to and used as an example of what this study aims to demonstrate.
