This research aims to understand the relationship between personality styles measured with The Millon Index of Personality Styles Revised – MIPS-R (Millon, 2004) and interrogative suggestibility as assessed by The Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scales – GSS1 and GSS2 (Gudjonsson, 1997). Hypotheses predicted the existence of individual differences in vulnerability to suggestion and that these differences correspond to differences in individuals’ personality traits. The internal-consistency reliability, the retest reliability and the validity studies conducted with the MIPS-R Portuguese adaptation show consistent results with those obtained with the original test. As part of the studies with the MIPS-R, an alternative to prevalence scores was proposed. Although innovative, the prevalence scores system is the most objectionable feature of the Millon instrumentation (Casullo & Solano, 2000; Grove & Vrieze, 2009). The Portuguese adaptation of the Suggestibility Scales highlights the psychometric limitations of these instruments, also recognized in other independent studies (Gignac & Powell, 2009; Polczyk, 2005). For this reason, in the main study, Yield 1 was used as a measure of suggestibility since its validity and reliability are adequate. The main study was conducted with a sample of 258 individuals (M age = 31.8 years, SD = 12.0), which responded to the MIPS-R and the GSS1 in individual experimental sessions. Results show individual differences in vulnerability to suggestion that correspond to certain personality characteristics, especially on the MIPS-R Thinking Styles and in some of its Behaving Styles. Results also confirm that suggestibility measured through the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scales is influenced by different personality variables than those that influence suggestibility measured through experimental paradigms (cf. Lee, 2004; Zhu et al., 2010). The implications of this conclusion for Forensic Psychology, as well as the contribution of research on the factors and conditions that influence the accuracy of testimony, are discussed.
