Resumo: At its basis, this dissertation reflects upon the concept of place and experience in the contemporary artistic production, attempting to outline a probable path of its artistic manifestation throughout this period. The first part of this outline aims to explore the artists’ growing interest in the social, political and cultural dynamics of a certain context, and the will to incorporate the artistic work into the heart of that reality. Starting with the first half of the 20th century, this study reflects upon the noticeable approach of the artistic work to the space that surrounds the work itself. The 1960’s and the 1970’s, through the Minimalist and Neo-Dadaist movements, signal the integration of the way space and observer are dealt with, with artistic thoughts and production. In the following periods the gradual insertion of the work in public spaces can be noticed, in direct relation with its context and the surrounding community. Therefore, this defines an exit movement from the institutionalised art spaces. During the 1990’s Nicholas Bourriaud signals the birth of the “relational aesthetics” as a movement and designation, which attempts to embrace in a single concept the artistic practices that no longer aim to represent imaginary and utopic realities but to construct models based on living existence. The second part of this dissertation presents the project of artistic creation developed in the University of Lisbon’s Botanical Garden (2007-2008). Stemming from the arguments presented in the first part of this dissertation, the proposed curatorial project that I created aimed to foster and reveal the shape of the artist’s relationship in a certain location, as much as the artistic value of this involvement. Simultaneously, this proposal presents a curator’s approach in an artistic project like this one, as it is also in relation with the place that the curatorial role gradually develops and defines itself
