Abstract(s)

Experimental poetry emerged in Portugal in 1964, with the issue of Caderno antológico da poesia experimental I by a group of poets who were following attentively the Brazilian and European concrete poetry movements. The group published concrete and visual poems, exhibited object-poems in art galleries and also organized happenings with musicians and visual artists. The Portuguese experimental poets published articles where they defended their experimental creativity as a gesture of dissatisfaction towards the incomprehension of the existing literary criticism. They also revalued the baroque, because they saw creative parallels between this historical era and their present day. In Portuguese experimental poetry there was a fruitful merging between poetry and the visual arts, which was developed in an international context of a new literary, aesthetic and artistic frame: the creation of object-poems based on their increasing visual communication. This thesis analyses the collective activities of the Portuguese experimental poetry between 1964 and 1974, focusing on the visual reading of the object-poems and investigating their characteristics in their literary and artistic context. For this analysis, we took into account the influence the dictatorship in Portugal, and the fact that they also built bridges with similar groups in other countries. The group of poets around the publication of Cadernos antológicos da poesia experimental (1964 and 1966) was very heterogeneous and not everyone practiced verbal-visual experimentation. Therefore, in this thesis we will scrutinize the various experimentalisms that occurred, and also the individual works of the poets whose encounter between poetry and the visual arts was more intense: António Aragão, Salette Tavares, E.M. de Melo e Castro, Ana Hatherly e Alberto Pimenta
