Social networking sites are websites on the internet that enable communication and social interaction by building a public or semi-public profile with information about the user that can be accessed by other users. Currently, the use of internet, including social networking sites, is one of the favorite activities of young people. Many studies show that the time spent in this activity continues to increase and that young people gain access several times to these websites through their computers and mobile phones. The online reality is a relatively safe environment for the development of psychosocial tasks and important interpersonal skills in adolescence â construction of identity, self-esteem, belonging to a group and autonomy of parental figures. In the last few years it has been conducted many studies in order to understand the emotional and social consequences of the use of social networking sites by teens and young adults. Some give special attention to the benefits and the use of these websites capabilities, while others mainly focus on the risks and negative consequences on development arising from its use. The objectives of this systematic review were to identify the research on the use of social networks in adolescence over the past few years; assess their consequences in terms of cognitive, social and emotional development; analyzing the potential and risks of using social networks in health; understand how educators and health professionals can act to prevent risky behaviors.
