Natureza fantástica : representações do outro mundo na obra de Eça de Queirós e Terrence Malick

Abstract

Nesta dissertação estudamos representações fantásticas e representações da natureza através da crítica comparada a uma selecção de obras de Eça de Queirós e Terrence Malick. As obras estudadas são o conto Adão e Eva no Paraíso (1897) e a antologia de textos conhecida como Prosas Bárbaras (1866-67), da autoria de Eça, e também a longa-metragem The Tree of Life (2011), da autoria de Malick. Argumenta-se a existência de um tema transversal ao corpus: o outro mundo. Considera-se então a relação deste tema com o conceito de fantástico, procurando estabelecer uma definição clara desse conceito. Finalmente, estudam-se os procedimentos artísticos utilizados, nas formas literária e cinematográfica, que constituem o que pode ser designado como representação fantástica da natureza. O tópico da natureza revela- se, nestas obras, intimamente relacionado com o problema dos limites da linguagem.

The present dissertation considers representations of the fantastic and representations of nature through a comparative critique of a selection of works by Eça de Queirós and Terrence Malick. We examine Queirós’s short-story Adão e Eva no Paraíso (1897) and the collection of texts known as Prosas Bárbaras (1866-67), as well as Malick’s feature film The Tree of Life (2011). We argue for the existence of a common theme throughout the corpus: the other world. We will then examine the relationship between this theme and the fantastic, seeking to establish a clear definition of this concept. We also study the artistic procedures used by the authors, in literary and cinematographic forms, which constitute what might be called a fantastic representation of nature. The subject of nature proves to be, in these works, intimately related to the problem of the limits of language.
