A livraria do Convento de Nossa Senhora da Serra da Arrábida : 1542-1834

Abstract

As bibliotecas eclesiásticas foram, durante séculos, as únicas instituições que produziram e preservaram os saberes e o conhecimento humano. Apesar de começarem com a finalidade de transmitir a palavra de Deus, a verdade é que acabaram por se transformar em verdadeiros santuários de conhecimento e património bibliográfico. Com este ponto de partida, qualquer estudo de uma biblioteca eclesiástica representa um campo transversal e/ou transdisciplinar, que reflete tanto elementos de história cultural, em geral, como aspetos da Ciência da Informação, em especial. Neste âmbito, com o presente projeto, pretende-se estudar a Livraria do Convento da Nossa Senhora da Serra da Arrábida durante o Antigo Regime. Situada no complexo conventual, no meio da Serra da Arrábida, é uma das poucas livrarias conventuais de Portugal que preservou tanto o espaço físico, como o núcleo bibliográfico, ainda que o mesmo se encontre atualmente integrado no Centro de Documentação da Fundação Oriente. O pleno conhecimento de como a Livraria do Convento de Nossa Senhora da Serra da Arrábida evoluiu ao longo do período da existência do Convento da Arrábida (1539-1834) poderá vir a ser possível, explorando e abordando todos os aspetos que define qualquer biblioteca enquanto espaço físico e de conhecimento ou memória. Os mesmos compreendem entre outras, as dimensões cronológicas e espaciais da livraria, como os aspetos inerentes à constituição, à organização do acervo bibliográfico e à identificação deste último através da análise documental. Sendo um estudo de natureza qualitativa, e fazendo uso do método investigação documental, permite conhecer a constituição do acervo bibliográfico, a composição temática, a distribuição dos livros por idiomas e séculos, a organização da coleção, constatando-se que a evolução da Livraria do Convento da Arrábida no Antigo Regime tem traços comuns com as livrarias conventuais no contexto nacional. Em suma, que esta é uma Livraria de estudo e formação.

Ecclesiastical libraries were, for many centuries, the only institutions that were able to generate and preserve lore and knowledge. Although their initial purpose was to deliver “the word of God”, they ended up being true sanctuaries of knowledge and bibliographical patrimony. Therefore, the study of any ecclesiastical library represents a transversal and transdisciplinary approach that encompasses not only elements of the cultural history but, above all, characteristics of the Information Science. With this project we pretend to study the Library of the Arrábida Convent during the Ancien Régime. Located on the monastic complex in Serra da Arrábida, it’s one of the few monastic libraries in Portugal that preserved its physical space and its bibliographical collection, even though it is now part of the Documentation Center of Fundação Oriente. A comprehensive knowledge of how the Library of the Arrábida Convent changed during its existence (1539-1834) can be achieved by examining and approaching every aspect that defines any library as a place of knowledge and memory. These involve the chronological and spatial dimensions of the library, the intrinsic features of the composition and organization of the bibliographical collection, and its identification through documentary analysis. Being a qualitative study using the documentary research method, it was possible to depict the themes, language, date and organization of the collection. We were able to conclude that the Library of the Arrábida Convent in the Ancien Régime has common traits with other monastic libraries in the national panorama, making it a meaningful library for study and formation.
